The desired result is to help the town avoid costly borrowing while awaiting tax payments. Each taxpayer will receive two bills each year, the first or “preliminary” bill is issued on or before July 1. This bill is payable in two equal payments on or before Aug. 3 and Nov. 2. Payment coupons will be provided in the tax bill. The preliminary bill is based on 1/2 of the adjusted net tax owed for the prior fiscal year. The second or “actual” tax bill will be sent to taxpayers by Dec. 31 and is also payable in two equal payments on or before Feb. 1 and May 3, 2010. This bill reflects the assessed valuation of the property, the tax rate, the amount of property taxes owed for the fiscal year, the paid amount of the preliminary tax billed earlier as a credit and the balance due after the credit. Personal exemptions and abatement requests are handled on the actual tax bill, not the preliminary. Anyone with questions may contact either the Collector’s office or the Assessor’s office at 508-394-8300. more |
