Town of Dennis Dog Friendly Walking Areas

The Town of Dennis has a Pooper Scooper bylaw requiring owners & keepers of dogs to pick up solid waste and dispose of it properly, and a Leash and Restraint bylaw pertaining to dogs. All dogs are required to be leashed or under immediate voice control of a responsible owner or keeper. There are fines for violations of these bylaws ranging from a written warning to $100.00, so please be respectful of other walkers and follow the rules. The beach areas may be closed seasonally due to protected shorebird nesting and reopen after the babies have fledged and left their nests. Thank you for not allowing your dogs to disturb the nesting sites, which are protected by law.

Dennis Public Beaches:  Animals/Dogs/Pets are not allowed on any Town Beaches or in Parking Areas, ANYTIME the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, This carries a penalty of a $50.00 fine for each violation. Animal Control and Natural Resources officers are on patrol during the summer evenings when animals are prohibited from beach activity.  Responsible owners are welcome to visit beaches with their dogs the rest of the year, as long as the dogs remain leashed, restrained, or under voice control. Owners are still required to clean up after their dog’s waste, and cautioned against allowing their pets to harass the protected shore birds during nesting seasons in the summer and fall months.

Fresh Pond Dog Park: This lovely new addition to our dog-friendly recreational areas boasts two fenced enclosures, a fresh water swimming area for dogs, and a walking trail through the woods. The dog park is conveniently located on Rte. 134 South, between traffic lights at Upper County Rd. and the traffic lights at Rte. 28.

Chapin Beach Conservation Area: Although Chapin public beach prohibits dogs during the summer season, dog owners may follow the 4 wheel drive tracks to the left of the public beach and walk the conservation area of the beach and sand flats year round. Dogs must be on leash at all times.  Beach parking sticker required during summer beach hours. Directions to Chapin beach: Take Rte. 6A Dennis to New Boston Rd. (stay to the left of the playground); take a right onto Beach St., a left onto Black Flats Rd., and a left onto Dr. Bottero Rd.

Crowe’s Pasture Conservation Area and Beach: Crowe’s Pasture is full of beautiful dirt roads to walk, scrub oak woods, meadows, and marsh land for viewing of our local wildlife and birds.  Be careful to watch for occasional approaching 4 wheel drive vehicles, with the beach itself at the end of the mile long road.  The dirt road is deeply rutted and rough for passenger cars, so you should opt instead to park at the beginning of the road near the cemetery and enjoy the lovely walk. Dogs must be on leash at all times. Directions to Crowe’s Pasture: Take Rte. 6A in East Dennis to School St. (across from Airline Rd, just before the Brewster Town Line), the first right onto South St., and go straight through the stop sign, the cemetery is on the right.

Indian Lands Conservation Area: This area has a dirt road, power lines, and woods path leading through hundreds of endangered Ladyslipper flowers in spring, beside Bass River for great views of the river and marsh with lots of squirrels to chase!  Please stay on the marked paths as there is private land to the left of the power lines. Indian Lands is located at 485 Main St. South Dennis, next to Dennis Town Hall.  Parking is located at the far right end of the lot, next to the cemetery.

The Cape Cod Rail Trail: This extensive trail is a former railroad bed that begins in Dennis and stretches through several Cape towns.  The tarred trail is straight and level, and has dirt sides for horseback riding, hikers, and dog walkers, which provides easy walking for the dog owner who may have difficulty getting around on other wooded paths (including elderly or disabled people and dogs that still enjoy an outing).  Beware of approaching bicyclists and other walkers as this is an area with frequent foot traffic. It is highly recommended that dogs be kept on leash to avoid accidental encounters with cyclists, pedestrians, other dogs, or horseback riders.
Directions from Rte. 6: Take Exit 9A (Rte. 134 South) and drive straight through 2 traffic lights, the Rail Trail is on the left, across from Hall Oil Co or from Old Bass River Road next to the Old Town Hall Parking lot.
