Home For Veterans Land Court Ruling

Town of Dennis – Home For Veterans Land Court Ruling
The Town of Dennis is pleased to announce that Judge Howard Speicher has ruled in favor of the Town of Dennis on an appeal to the Land Court regarding a Home for Veterans on Route 134, East Dennis. The Judge ruled that the Town had successfully demonstrated that the abutters claims of harm are either unsubstantiated or not protected issues under the Dennis Zoning By-law. This ruling will allow the Town to move forward on plans for the Dennis Home for Veterans.

Former Selectman Wayne Bergeron, who continues to represent the Board on the Home for Veterans project at their request, was ecstatic upon learning the news. “We can finally move forward with this important project!” said Bergeron. “We have many donors asking for project updates, now we can finalize the commitments made to date, and reach out to the community to close remaining gaps.”

“We are very excited and extremely grateful!” exclaimed Regina Giambusso, Executive Director of the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center, upon learning of the case outcome. “The Cape and Islands greatly appreciates the generosity of the Town of Dennis in initiating this project to benefit homeless veterans, and in continuing to support it despite the long struggle to bring it to fruition.”

The Town of Dennis made the parcel of land at 1341 Route 134 available for the Dennis Home for Veterans in the fall of 2016.  The five-bedroom home will provide an opportunity to help five veterans escape the streets. The home will provide a stable living arrangement for veterans who are, or at risk of becoming, homeless. To date there has been broad community support for the project.

The Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center was selected by the Town to own and operate the home, with the Town maintaining ownership of the site. The Center provides a variety of services to Cape veterans including counseling, housing assistance and a food pantry.

Dennis Town Administrator Elizabeth Sullivan thanked Dennis Town Counsel Ilana Quirk for her commitment to helping the town with this case; Rich Dadoly, Robin Wilcox, Robert Perry and Chris Lambton for all of their support during the trial; and the residents and businesses of Dennis for the overwhelming continuing support they have shown to help these individuals in our community who have given so much to each one of us.

Town Planner Dan Fortier noted, “We now need to push this home to its conclusion.  Reach back out to all our donors, large and small. Thank them for their patience.  And, hope we can make this past winter the last one that five of our heroes have to spend with no roof over their head.”
