Phone and Internet Fraud/Scams
Updated Aug 2016
Hello, this is Officer Nick Patsavos, Crime prevention Officer, with the Dennis Police Department.
We have seen a recent spike in telephone scams during the past few months.~ The Dennis Police Department recommends getting caller ID and an answering machine for your home phone.~ Knowing who is calling you prior to picking up the phone is the first line of defense.
Never give out any personal information over the phone.~ Legitimate companies that you do business with already have that information.
If you receive a call saying that you have won money; have to send money because a family member is in trouble; or from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, the IRS, FBI, or other Federal agency, immediately hang up the phone.
In addition to reporting it to the police you can also report the scam to the FBI using the website www.ic3.gov
