The Conservation Commission regulates all work that occurs within or adjacent to wetlands areas. Conservation regulations for projects have been promulgated by the state legislature (Wetland Protection Act G. L. c. 131 § 40, and 310 CMR 10.00 and local town meeting (Dennis Wetland Bylaw). The Conservation Agent / Natural Resource Officer, Paul C. The Commission also employs a Technical Consultant, Ms. Peggy Fantozzi, who reviews all Notices of Intent, Requests for Determination of Applicability, and issues Certificates of Compliance. The Conservation Agent acts as a liaison between the Conservation Commission and the general public. The Commission conducts public hearings for various projects pursuant to the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act. The Commission is also responsible for the management of over 1800 acres of Conservation land within the Town. The Conservation Administrator also oversees protection measures for endangered species and critical wildlife habitats. The Conservation Division is located on the lower level of the Town Hall.

The Commission meets the first and third Thursday of each month at the Town Hall 485 Main Street, lower level in hearing room.

Who needs to file with the Conservation Commission?
Anyone who wishes to perform work or near a resource area defined in the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act G.L. c. 131 § 40 or the Town of Dennis Wetlands Bylaw. Jurisdiction under the State Act and Local Wetlands Bylaw is 100 feet from a resource area. Generally resource areas are wetland, pond, beach, ocean, costal dune, coastal bank or 200 feet from the mean water line of a river. Please note the list of resource areas is not limited to those listed here. Consult the Wetlands Act and Local Bylaw for a more extensive list.
Do I need an engineer or surveyor?
Depending on the project; you may need to consult with a registered engineer or surveyor. The Conservation Agent can help you determine whether or not consultant services are necessary or required.
How long does it take to go through the permitting process?
Usually about a month, if everything is clear and understood. In some cases, it could be as short as two weeks.
How much will it cost?
