Building Department

Mission

The mission of the building department is to promote life safety and to preserve the health and well being of the citizens of the Town of Dennis in their connection with buildings and land use. The Departments focus is to educate the public, enforce minimum building, plumbing, gas electrical and zoning standards through teamwork and personal pride, and to enhance the relationship with the public and building community using customer service oriented professionalism.

During the temporary closure of Dennis Town Hall, please refer to the following procedures for permitting:

  • Building,Tent, Electrical, Plumbing & Gas Permits and Historic Applications to be mailed to: Dennis Town Hall, 685 Route 134, South Dennis MA 02660: Attn: Building Department or can be dropped off at the Town Hall dropbox located inside at the side entrance.
  • Any tent over 120 square feet requires a permit. No tent shall be occupied until the building and fire departments have completed the required inspections.
  • Express Building, Sheet Metal, Electrical and Plumbing and Gas Permits and Historic Applications MUST have a check accompany the permit/application to be processed. Fee schedule is available online on the Building Department page. Once processed, the permit will be emailed to the applicant/contractor.
  • All other Building Permits will be reviewed, assessed a fee and applicant will be contacted by office staff when permit is approved. Instructions will be sent via email on how to pay and receive their permit.

  • All Building, Electrical, Plumbing and Gas permits, and Historic applications MUST have valid email address on all forms.

During the temporary closure of Dennis Town Hall, please refer to the following procedures for inspections:

  • Click the "schedule an inspection link" on our Building Department Page.Inspection requests will only be taken thru the online inspection link.
  • As of June 8, 2020 the Building Department will resume all exterior inspections as well as any inspections related to new construction. Any inspection requested for inside existing occupied buildings will be managed on a case by case basis. We will no longer be accepting written or signed affidavits and photographs for any inspections requested after June 5, 2020.This policy applies to all inspections including but not limited to Building, Plumbing, Gas and Wiring.

 


Please submit all inspection requests (building, plumbing, gas and electric) directly from our website. Permit numbers are required on all inspection requests.


Please note as of March 1, 2019  applicants and contractors must receive sign offs from the following departments prior to submitting Building Permits, Building Express Permits and Accessory Structure Zoning Compliance Certificates per Nick Mayo, Building Commissioner:

1. Tax Department

2. Conservation Department (if applicable)

3. Health  Department (if applicable)

The Town of Dennis has adopted the MA Stretch Energy Code and it will be in effect as of January 1, 2020.

As of 1/6/2020 Electrical Inspections will be Monday - Friday 9:30 am - noon.

As of  2/7/2020 the 2018 International Energy Code and any Massachusetts Amendments thereto will be in effect.

Please be advised that ALL new buildings (residential & commercial) will require a final as-built prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy. Please plan accordingly.
