- Town of Dennis Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles, Straws and Stirrers Bylaw Bans Taking Effect 

At the May 8, 2021 Town Meeting, citizens of the Town of Dennis passed a ban on the commercial Sale of Single-use Plastic Water Bottles which becomes effective on December 31, 2021.  On that date “it shall be unlawful to sell non-carbonated, unflavored drinking water in single-use plastic bottles of less than one gallon in the Town of Dennis.”  

Any establishment conducting sales in violation of this article shall be subject to a non-criminal disposition fine as specified in G. L. Chapter 40 § 21D. The following penalties apply: 

  •  First violation: Written warning 
  •  Second violation: $150 fine 
  •  Third and subsequent violations: $300 fine 

    Each day a violation continues constitutes a separate violation, incurring additional fines. Any such fines collected shall be payable to the Town of Dennis. 
    The Attorney General approved these bylaws on August 6, 2021.   

    Therefore, as of December 31, 2021, you cannot sell non-carbonated, unflavored drinking water in single-use plastic bottles, that are under 1 Gallon.   

    As a reminder, at the October 3, 2020 Special Town Meeting, citizens of the Town of Dennis passed a ban on the sale or dispensing of single-use plastic straws and plastic stirrers, including those made from polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene, by any food establishment, retail establishment or public venue in the Town of Dennis. This by-law becomes effective January 1, 2022
  • Fines for violation of the sale or dispensing of plastic straws and stirrers by-law are identical to those of the plastic bottle ban by-law.
